If you have a layover in Frankfurt and at least 4 hours available, you can leave the airport and explore the city safely.

This guide shows the exact step-by-step route, how to get from Frankfurt Airport to the city center, how much time you need, and how to return without missing your flight.

Based on a real 4-hour layover, this plan is fast, simple, and safe if you follow the timing carefully.

Minimum Layover Time Needed to Leave Frankfurt Airport

Before leaving the airport, you need to calculate your real available time, not just what appears on your ticket.

Example (my case):

Arrival in Frankfurt (FRA): 07:50, Terminal 2
Next flight: 12:30, Terminal 1
Real time after landing and transfer: around 08:30

Although the layover looked like 4h 40m, in reality I had about 4 hours of usable time.

What Affects Your Available Time

1. Hand luggage vs checked luggage

Hand luggage only: fast and ideal for leaving the airport
Checked luggage: add 40–60 minutes for transfer — in most cases, leaving the airport is not worth it

2. Check-in

Online check-in: saves time and is strongly recommended
Airport check-in: can add another 20–40 minutes

The Simple Rule

After landing, transferring between terminals, and exiting the airport, you should have at least 2 hours of free time before boarding.

If you have less than 2 hours, it’s better to stay in the airport.

In my case, with around 4 hours available and only hand luggage, leaving the airport was safe.

How to Buy an S-Bahn Ticket at Frankfurt Airport

Follow the S signs inside the airport toward the S-Bahn station.
Next to the platforms, you’ll find RMV ticket machines (you can switch the interface to English).

Buy a Day Ticket (Tagesticket) — it costs roughly the same as two single tickets and saves time.

The ticket is valid immediately after purchase — no need to validate it.

How to Get from Frankfurt Airport to the City Center

From the airport station, take S8 or S9 toward the city center.
They run every 10–15 minutes, so you can simply board the first one that arrives.

Travel time: 15–16 minutes
Best stop for this route: Frankfurt (Main) Taunusanlage

In my case, I reached the city center at 09:00.

Frankfurt Layover Walking Route (1–1.5 Hours)

This is the exact route I followed — ideal if you have a 2–4 hour layover and want to see the main highlights quickly.

1. Main Tower (optional)

One of Frankfurt’s tallest skyscrapers (200 m to the roof, 240 m including the spire). You can admire it from outside, or go up to the observation deck if time and visibility allow.

Opening hours:
- Summer: 10:00–21:00
- Winter: 10:00–19:00
Ticket price: around €9

If visibility is poor (like in my case), it’s better to skip the viewing platform and save time. If the weather is clear and you have at least 30 extra minutes, it’s worth it.

2. Goethe House

A short walk from Main Tower, this is the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Ticket price: around €12
Visit time: about 1 hour

If you’re short on time, it’s enough to stop for a quick look outside. If you have a longer layover, visiting the interior is a good option.

3. Römerberg (Old Town Square)

The historic heart of Frankfurt, known for its half-timbered buildings, City Hall, and lively atmosphere.

It’s a great place for a short break. Prices are slightly higher here — a coffee and a quick snack can cost around €15–20 — but the location is worth it.

4. Iron Footbridge (Eiserner Steg)

Walk toward the Main River and cross this historic pedestrian bridge, built in 1869.

It connects Römerberg with the Sachsenhausen district and offers one of the best views of Frankfurt’s skyline.

This is also one of the most photogenic spots along the route.

Returning to Frankfurt Airport

From the bridge area, walk back to Hauptwache S-Bahn station.

Take the S9 (direction Wiesbaden Hbf) — it goes directly to the airport.

Travel time: around 15 minutes

Plan to leave the city center at least 2 hours before your next flight.
In my case, I left around 10:30 for a 12:30 flight, which gave enough time for security and boarding.

Final Verdict: Is a Frankfurt Layover Worth It?

This plan is based on a real layover and works well only if a few conditions are met:

you have hand luggage only
check-in is already done
you have at least 2 hours of free time after exiting the airport
you leave enough buffer for security and boarding

If your layover is shorter, it’s better to stay in the airport.

If it’s longer, you can extend the route by visiting the Main Tower observation deck, exploring Goethe House, walking along the river, or stopping for a proper meal in the old town.
